Frequently Asked Questions About the SEE Program
The SEE Program offers incoming first year freshman Truman students the opportunity to receive additional support from professional staff and peers through opportunities to: participate in a two-week academically-based summer institute; build community; participate in a peer mentoring program; experience a deeper connection to the campus community; and access to skill-building workshops.
The SEE Program takes place the 2 weeks immediately preceding Move-In Day for the Fall semester. This typically means that the SEE Program begins the first week of August and will continue until the day before Truman Week begins.
Through SEE, students will:
- Get an introduction to the Truman curriculum through a Writing Workshop and introductory math course.
- Cultural enhancement opportunities through diversity education and exposure to students from diverse identities
- Confidence and self-efficacy to succeed at Truman
- Connection to relevant campus resources
- And a community of scholars and staff as a support system
On average, the program serves between 25-35 scholars each year. These students come to Truman from all over the United States.
The Office of Admissions invites Truman applicants to participate in the SEE Program. For direct questions, please contact the Office of Admissions at 660-785-4114.
The SEE Program covers the majority of expenses during the duration of the two-week program. The SEE Program is responsible for:
- Summer tuition for the Summer Writing Workshop (INDV 190)
- Room and meal costs for the duration of the 2 week institute
- Any necessary books and supplies needed for the Summer Institute
The SEE Program also covers most of the expenses for weekend activities and meals.
Because we believe complete commitment is important for an effective transition from high school to college, all participants are required to live on campus and remain in Kirksville for the duration of the SEE Program. SEE Scholars will all be housed together in a community-style living environment. SEE Scholars have the opportunity to take advantage of the computer lab, elevators, laundry room, kitchenettes, ice machine, and lounges.
During the SEE Program, scholars participate in a one-credit hour course that counts toward a Truman Liberal Studies Program requirement. In addition to their one-credit hour writing course, scholars also begin a mathematics course they will continue into the fall semester. These courses are designed to enhance individual math and writing skills.
- Regular meetings with the SEE Program Coordinator
- Biweekly Academic Coaching from SEE student staff members
- Peer Mentoring
- A shared course called Skill for Academic Success with fellow SEE Scholars during the fall semester
