Scholastic Enhancement Experience Counselor
The Center for Diversity & Inclusion at Truman State University will hire four students to serve as Counselors for the Scholastic Enhancement Experience (SEE) Program. The SEE Program at Truman provides a unique opportunity for selected students to better prepare for the educational, social, and personal demands of college.
SEE is a two-week summer residential program that provides an opportunity for these students to gain admission to Truman by participating and excelling in a structured program designed to aid in their transition to collegiate life. The overall program goals are to build and facilitate social networking and to ease the transition of program participants into their first year at Truman. The SEE Program typically serves between 25 and 35 incoming first-year students.
During the duration of the SEE program, these students will take a 1-credit hour course focused on writing, particularly critical analysis, as well as begin the mathematics curriculum, depending on their math placement exam. In addition, SEE scholars will participate in daily workshops and activities that will enable them to be successful at our institution. SEE scholars and counselors will be housed in a university residence and eat at a university dining facility. The SEE Program will run from Sunday, July 26, 2020 through Tuesday, August 11, 2020; however, SEE Counselors will report for duty Thursday, July 23, 2020 for training. On Sunday, August 9, SEE scholars will move into their permanent residence halls for the fall semester in preparation for Truman Week. SEE counselors will then move to their respective housing.
SEE Counselors play a primary role in the lives of the SEE scholars and greatly impact their experiences during the SEE Program. Counselors have two short weeks to build a strong community between scholars and have a positive influence on their initial Truman experience. Thus, SEE counselors should be articulate, personable, innovative, and possess strong leadership qualities. Major responsibilities of the SEE Counselors include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as role models to program participants;
- Monitoring students in a residential environment to ensure individuals are in compliance with Residence Life and University policies and regulations;
- Organizing social activities and workshops that will positively impact the participants academic and personal growth; and
- Serving as the bridge between the participants, Center for Diversity & Inclusion, and the University.
Minimum Requirements for Employment
Students seeking a position as a SEE Counselor must have completed at least one full year at Truman State University prior to Fall 2020. SEE Counselors must have a CUM GPA of 2.5 or higher at time the SEE Program. GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
Compensation
SEE Counselors will receive a stipend in the amount of $500. SEE Counselors will receive on-campus room and board from Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, August 9*.
*SEE Counselors are required to live in the residence hall. Room and board will only be covered for the duration of the SEE Program and the training days prior to the program’s start. Counselors living in the Residence Halls for the Fall semester will be allowed to move into their on-campus rooms on August 12-14 and remain there until the start of the Fall semester.
We also expect that SEE Counselors with eligible driver’s licenses take the Drivers Training Course through Truman’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) during the Spring semester before the program begins. This will certify you to drive University fleet vehicles used to transport scholars around town for various activities.
